Training at UCLPartners (A trainee representatives perspective)
Ophthalmology training across North London (NW/NC/NE) is definitely an enjoyable and rewarding experience. From the first day of your training right up to to the year of Trainee Selected Component (TSC), there are plenty of training opportunities and support.
Even though there are a high number of trainees, there are also a lot of consultant trainers who are knowledgeable and supportive in every stage of your training.
To bring you up to speed with the basics in the first two weeks, there is a specialty induction for all ST1s on basic knowledge and fundamental ophthalmic assessments.
Afterwards, trainees are allocated to different units across North London, including Moorfields Eye Hospital, rotating on an annual basis. Training includes regular clinical and surgical sessions, aiming to ensure a steady progress of competency achievements.
With the training contained within the M25 and the river Thames, trainees generally find it easy to commute within the metropolitan area, which also provides a wide range of interesting and often unique pathologies.
Apart from timetabled clinical activities, the proximity of the Royal College of Ophthalmology and the Royal Society of Medicine allow for additional learning opportunities and social gatherings with fellow trainees. Furthermore, those with clinical academic interests will find it easy to get involved with research in their areas of interest.
Overall, the North London Ophthalmology training offers a balanced programme to ensure that trainees become not only competent but also well-rounded ophthalmologists. We have thoroughly enjoyed it and we hope others will have a similar experience.
