A career in Chemical Pathology and Metabolic Medicine encompasses a wide variety of different areas of medicine making the specialty one of the most diverse areas in which to practice. The specialty has often been described as a mixture of clinical and laboratory medicine which is a major attraction for many doctors. The flexibility of this unique and challenging specialty allows you to develop a wide range of interests and skills such as dealing with complicated diagnostic problems or management of rare metabolic disorders. Where you go in this specialty will depend upon your interests and abilities.
As a consultant, you would be working across a range of different clinical areas such as lipids, inherited metabolic disorders, endocrinology or osteoporosis with additional laboratory responsibilities. Whatever you decide to do as your future career, this specialty is flexible, exciting and rewarding. As it is largely a clinic and laboratory based specialty, the working hours are especially sensible.
We can provide a training programme that is intended to give trainees wide experience and exposure to chemical pathology and metabolic medicine; including experience with national and international experts. All the consultants involved in training in Chemical Pathology and metabolic medicine are involved in direct patient care and thus the programme is able to provide clinical training in Adult and Pediatric Inherited Metabolic Disorders, Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity, Calcium and Metabolic Bone Disease, Lipid Disorders and Cardiovascular Risk Prevention and Nutritional Support.
