Trauma and Orthopaedics

The orthopaedic training programme in North Central East London has over 100 Trainees. It is one of the finest training rotations in the country for trauma & orthopaedics, especially as it has the major trauma centre at the Royal London Hospital & the major tertiary referral centre at the RNOH Stanmore. This provides trainees with a unique insight into the whole breadth of trauma & orthopaedics during their training. The rotations have a long history of being able to place trainees in consultant posts throughout the country.

Education & research are also high priority & trainees are expected to participate. Many trainees undertake MD’s & PhD’s. This is encouraged and is certainly what will be required in the future for teaching hospital appointments. There is also an MSc in Orthopaedics linked to the postgraduate teaching programme.

Trainees enjoy the rotation and there is a high success rate in the FRCS (Orth) exam.

Regional teaching information

4 year rolling teaching programme, 3 modules per year, covering all topics required for the FRCS (Orth) examination.

Held on a Wednesday evening at the RNOH Stanmore from 5.00 – 7.00 pm.

Simulation teaching

There are 2 simulation centres, one at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel and the second at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore. Simulation is encouraged and trainees from all rotations can access the simulation suite at any time.

Academic training opportunities

All trainees have the opportunity to undertake an MSc, MD or PhD. This is encouraged in our training programme.

Specialty specific research and special interest opportunities

Research is encouraged at the RNOH with access to the Institute of Orthopaedics laboratories.

Education Fellowships

The RNOH has several post CCT fellowships which are available in open competition and these are highly sought after.

Specialty specific external courses

The RNOH hospital runs many courses through its Teaching Centre which are available for RNOH Trainees to attend, as well as Trainees from other parts of the country.

Out of Programme information

With the reduction in training hours, it is expected that trainees will complete their training programme and achieve CCT before they undertake fellowships. Pre-CCT fellowships will be allowed only at the discretion of the Training Programme Directors for high achieving candidates.
